In 1982, Elliot Thayer received his professional engineer’s license and started Thayer Engineering
Company. Over the next two years, he brought in two partners, Andy Dunbar and Bob Clunie, along with
other employees. In 1984 he bought the building that Thayer Engineering Company now calls home. Today,
there are six employees at this small but very busy Farmingdale engineering firm. Elliot Thayer and
Thayer Engineering Company received the 2006 President's Award from the Kennebec Valley Chamber of
Commerce, a testament to their value to the community. In 2012 Bob Clunie retired.
Land surveying projects completed by Elliot Thayer and his team include boundary, topographic and
hydrographic surveys for private, commercial and governmental clients. Elliot oversees all the planning
and design of commercial and industrial buildings and facilities sites; marine terminals; highways
and streets; recreational facilities; storm drainage systems; sewer systems; erosion & sedimentation
control; residential, commercial and industrial developments and subdivisions. Elliot has acted as
an expert witness in numerous cases in his capacity as a Professional Land Surveyor and as a Professional
Engineer.
Career Background
Elliot graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1976 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He
has been a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of Maine since 1973 and a Professional Engineer in
the State of Maine since 1982. Before starting Thayer Engineering, Elliot was an assistant engineer at
the Maine Department of Transportation in Augusta, Maine and a manager of the survey division at Doten
Associates in Augusta, Maine. Elliot has completed numerous short courses, continuing education courses,
seminars and workshops in various topics, such as real estate law, boundary law and legal principles,
environmental law, land surveying, computer programming and programs, street and road design, geology,
hydrology and environmental engineering.
Elliot has been a member of several professional societies: the Maine Society of Land Surveyors (Secretary
in 1984-1985); the Legislative Committee of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors (Chairman in 1999-2000)
and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
